BALLYHEIGUE U-15: Travelled to Hermitage Park, Lixnaw on Tuesday evening
to face Ballyduff in the North Kerry U15 Hurling Championship Final (Johnny
Hussey Memorial Shield). On a perfect evening for hurling, Ballyheigue
struck first with a beautiful strike from a narrow angle by Captain David
O’Mahony. This was followed in the 9th & 10th minutes by a well-worked goal
from Félim O’Sullivan and a point from Jordan Goggin. However, by the 17th
minute Ballyduff had reduced the margin to the bare minimum with two points
from play and two frees. A Tomás Gaynor free and a David O’Mahony strike
from play put a goal between the sides. A point from play by Ballyduff and
a 65″ from David left the halftime score at Ballyheigue 1-5 Ballyduff 0-5.
By the 36th minute buachaillí an Bhaile Dhuibh had gone into a one point
lead as they raised a white flag followed two minutes later by a beautiful
goal. Two frees from Tomás Gaynor had Ballyheigue back in the lead at the
42nd minute mark. In the 44th minute a Ballyduff strike from play was
followed seconds later by a point from David O’Mahony. Three Tomás Gaynor
frees put Ballyheigue into a 4 point lead, 1-11 to 1-7. A Ballyduff free in
the 55th was followed in the 57th by the decisive score of the game when a
pass from Muiris Harty found David O’Mahony and he dispatched the sliotar
to the Ballyduff net to put two goals between the sides. Ballyduff scored
a point in the 60th minute. They then pushed hard to get the goals they
needed and they were rewarded in the second minute of injury time when a
free was flicked to the Ballyheigue net. However, Tom Godley blew the
whistle and Ballyheigue had held out for victory. Well done to both sides
on a fantastic game of hurling and thanks to Lixnaw for having the pitch in
such a fantastic condition. Pat Dineen of the North Kerry Hurling Board
presented the Johnny Hussey Memorial Shield to Captain David O’Mahony.
Séamie Ó Fuaráin was named Player of the Match. A great evening for our
club and all of Ballyheigue should be very proud of these young men. A
special word of thanks to Team Mentors Jason Casey, Seánie Colgan and
