BALLYHEIGUE NOTES – 27th June 2016

BALLYHEIGUE SUMMER FESTIVAL takes place this year from Monday 4th July
to Sunday
10th July 2016. Lots of activities for young and old. Some special items of
interest will be – Monday 4th July Celebration of Light 8.00pm (Beach)
benefit for Pieta House; Tuesday 5th July Historical Talk in White Sands
Hotel; Wednesday – Poker Night in Flahive’s Bar; Thursday – Fun & Games for
kids of all ages (on Beach); Friday in the Family Resource Centre (Sraid
Thaidhg) from 11am – 2pm games & BBQ €2 p/person; Saturday 9th Kids
Disco €3 at 2pm in Comm. Centre, and 3.30pm Dog Show on Village Green;
Sunday 10th July at 3 pm Tug of War on Dolly’s Green, and 4.30pm Grand

CELEBRATION OF LIGHT 2016: Recovery Haven is delighted to announce with the
help of Ballyheigue Summer Festival committee that once again we will be
holding our Celebration of Light in Ballyheigue Beach on Monday 4th July at
8pm. This event is for people to celebrate the lives of their family and
friends who have passed away. Our event involves a small piece been read
which touched lots of hearts last year and then the lighting of the candles
which are on sale in The Post Office, John Hartnett’s top of street, and
The White Sands. Cost of candles €3 or 2 for €5. Candles will also be sold
on the night. Everybody welcome. We hope this year will be as successful as
last year. Looking forward to seeing you all. Please let anyone you know
who might receive some comfort from such an event. Thank you.

SPECIAL LECTURE: The second annual John Joe O’Sullivan Memorial Lecture
will be held in the Ballroom of White Sands Hotel on Tuesday 5th July at 8.45
pm. The title is very appropriate given the Centenary Celebrations of the
founding of the Republic: “Roger Casement’s time in Kerry, 1916” The
speaker at the function is Mr. Donal J. O’ Sullivan. He is the retired
Chief Superintendent of An Garda Siochana, Tralee and is the author of many
history books. All are welcome. Admission is free. A lovely interesting
night is in store for everyone, even visitors to our parish, which the late
John Joe so dearly loved. The lecture forms part of the programme of the
Ballyheigue Summer Festival and is run by the History and Heritage Group.

CROSSROADS DANCING: The Thresher Group will be holding an exhibition of
Crossroad Dancing during the Festival also. The famous Lodge Cross platform
will be used and put in place near the Casement Monument for the occasion.
Local and regional dance troupes have indicated that they will be
performing various styles of dancing. Musicians and singers too will
embellish the occasion for the enjoyment of locals, tourists and visitors
alike. You too are invited to exhibit your stylish traditional steps on
Wednesday 6th July at 8.30. The committee is very grateful for the promised
regional support, especially the Causeway Comhaltas Groups. This should be
a lovely addition to the Festival Calendar.

COMMUNITY GAMES 2016: Very best of luck to all our teams taking part in The
Munsters in UL this Saturday July 2nd.

VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED: Are you a retired Nurse, a Student looking for
placement or looking to give back to your community? If so, we are looking
for Volunteers to be part of our non-independent Respite Day-care Service
we provide on Friday and Saturdays, your help would be greatly appreciated
to improve our local provision of this service. Please phone 066 7133837 or
call in for a cuppa and a chat.

MOBILE APPS DEVELOPMENT: Summer camp running in Ballyheigue FRC from 2nd to
5th August (9:30am – 12pm). Learn to build Android apps such as games,
quiz’s, SMS apps and more. Bring your own laptop and if you’ve got an
Android tablet, bring that too to download your apps onto. Contact Sinéad
on 086-8307698. 50 Euros per child with a 50% deposit required to secure
your child’s place (non-refundable).

REGISTRATION: for new after-schools term will take place on Tuesday June
28th at 6.15pm to 7pm in the Family Resource Centre. Limited places
available and also please insure that if eligible for subvention that your
medical card is presented when registering.

COURSING LOTTO: The following numbers were drawn on Monday 20th June
in the Ballyheigue & District Coursing club Lotto: 1-2-9-13. Jackpot was
not won. The €50 winner was John Mike Sullivan, C/o Macs. The €25 winners
were: Garry Kenny, C/o Macs, Eoghan Kenny, C/o Macs and Aidan O’Mahony, C/o
Macs. Next week’s Jackpot €4,300.

NIGHT AT THE DOGS: The Ballyheigue & District Coursing Club is holding a
fundraising night at Tralee Greyhound Track on Saturday 2nd July. Tickets
€10 which includes race card and a chance to win €500 on the buster race.

GAELCHOLÁISTE GLEAN DOIRE: The popular Irish Language Summer School
resumes this year from Monday 11th to 15th July, and Monday 18th to 22nd
July. A limited numbers of places still available. The school starts at
9.30am each day. The Irish language is taught is a fun way. Afternoon
activities include Kayaking, Surfing, Carting, Cooking, Zip Wiring, Gym
Work and Mini Golf. Application forms available from Glenderry National

DEATH: The death took place on Monday 20th June 2016 of Mary Barry (née
Dowling) Muskerry Estate, Ballincollig, Co. Cork and late of Ballyheigue
Co. Kerry. Dearly beloved wife of Pat, much loved mother of David, Deirdre
and John and sister of Dermot, Joe, Michael, Sheila and the late Noreen.
Sadly missed by her loving husband, family, brothers, sister,
daughter-in-law Franziska, relatives and a large circle of friends.
Reception prayers on Wednesday evening 22nd June in the Church of St. Mary
and St. John, Ballincollig. Requiem Mass on Thursday 23rd June, funeral
afterwards to the Island Crematorium, Ringaskiddy. May she rest in peace.

FIRST FRIDAY COMMUNION CALLS: Fr Leane will bring Holy Communion to the
elderly on next Thursday afternoon 30th June and Friday morning 1st July at
the usual times.

OUTDOOR MASSES: Friday 1st July, Keel Cemetery 7.30pm and

Tuesday 12th July, St. Marys’/Holy Family Cemetery 7.30pm.

TRALEE DIABEETES SUPPORT GROUP: will be held in the Rose Hotel (Fels Point)
on Thursday 30th June at 7.30pm.

KELLOGG’S GAA CÚL CAMPS: The Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camp will take place at the
John Joe O’Sullivan Park from 18th to 22nd July. Cost €55 per child with
reductions for additional members of family. Camps are open to primer
schools children between 6 & 13 years of age. Monday to Friday 10am to
2.30 pm daily.

UNDER 13: The Ballyheigue Under-13 hurlers defeated St. Brendan’s in the
North Kerry Championship during the week. They will now play Ballyduff at
Ballyduff in the semi-final this Wednesday evening 6.30pm.

GAA LOTTO: The following numbers were drawn at last Sunday’s GAA Lotto:
11-18-21-28. The Jackpot of €3,650 was not won. Next week’s Jackpot will
be €3,700. The two €50 winners were: Joan Leen, Church Road and Ann
O’Halloran, Buncurrig. The €25 winner was Joan Griffin, Caherulla.

SENIOR: The senior hurlers were well beaten by St. Brendan’s in the
Garvey’s Hurling Championship at Abbeydorney on Sunday; score St. Brendan’s
5.20 and Ballyheigue 0.6. They are drawn against Ballyduff in the losers
round on July 10th.

FĒILE: The Ballyheigue U-14 Féile team contested the semi-final of Féile
of Féile Peil na nOg, but lost out to Horeswood, Wexford; score Ballyheigue
0-3 and Horeswood 0-8. It was a great and enjoyable week-end for all the
players and mentors.
