Against Suicide’ is a registered charity that aims to raise awareness that
“it is OK not to feel OK, and it’s absolutely ok to ask for help”. The
SpinOff is organised by the community for the community and for the benefit
of everyone in an effort to break the cycle of suicide in Ireland.
Ballyheigue Community Centre was one of the main stopovers for the 2016
Tralee SpinOff cycle.

The local organising committee are currently sourcing refreshments, and if
anyone would like to contribute sandwiches /baking / fruit etc. for the
event on Saturday August 19th, please contact Joann or Louise in the Centre
on 066-7133837 or drop into the Community Centre. Thank you all in

KERRY HOSPICE FOUNDATION: The AGM for K.H.F. of the Ballyheigue branch will
be at the Family Resource Centre on 23rd August at 8.30pm. Everyone

2017 PERSON OF THE YEAR – by the Kerry Association London

A woman who advises some of the world’s leading health organisations has
been chosen as the 2017 Person of the Year. Liz Shanahan, a Castleisland
native – like so many others – arrived in London in the mid-eighties on the
Slattery’s Bus. She lives in London with her husband, Tim Lacey who hails
from Tralee. Liz is a member of the well-known Shanahan Chemist family and
spends time in their home near Killorglin.

The Irish Times has named Liz as one of Ireland’s Women of the World and a
global leader in Healthcare & Life-sciences.

MASS IN THE COMMUNITY CENTRE: Sunday (13th August) was the last Summer Mass
in the Community Centre for this year. The Parish Priests would like to
thank the staff and management of the Community Centre for having the hall
ready for the Mass each week. Also special thanks to Liturgy Group, Altar
Society, Choir, Ministers of the Eucharist and of course Fr. Martin.

THE PATTERN THRESHER FESTIVAL: A full programme of events is now drafted
for the Pattern Weekend. A feature of the festival deals with an
illustrated talk on the Singing/Song tradition by Peter Kelly, who is an
award winning composer of songs, himself.

All singers and the general public in the North Kerry area, with an
interested in enriching their song repertoire, are invited to this Event in
the White Sand’s Ballroom at 7.30 pm on Diaspora Day, Saturday 9th
September. There is no charge as this aspect of the Festival is grant-aided
by the Community Department of Kerry Co. Council, for which the steering
committee is most grateful. So a very happy festival event is in store
again for everyone for this year’s traditional Pattern.

COURSING LOTTO: The Following numbers were drawn on Monday 7th August in
the Ballyheigue and District Coursing Club 5-8-17-28. The Jackpot was not
won. The €50 winner was Lily Crowley c/o Christina. The €25 winners were
John Madden, C/o Christina. Maurice J. Harmon, C/o Macs and S.M.A. c/o
Christina. Next week’s Jackpot is €7,200.

GAA LOTTO: The following numbers were drawn at last Sunday’s GAA Lotto.
8-18-24-29. The Jackpot of €6,500 was not won. Next week’s Jackpot will be
€6,550. The two €50 winners were Marian Hussey, Glenderry and Andrew
Sheehy, Church Road, Ballyheigue. The €25 winner was Rory Cantillon,

FIXTURES: Co Under-12 Hurling. Ballyheigue v Tralee Parnells this Friday
evening at John Joe O’Sullivan Park at 6.30pm.

KERRY MINORS: The Kerry Minor Hurlers were defeated by Kildare in the all
Ireland ‘B’ Championship Q-Final at Dr Hide Park on Saturday. Brendan Walsh
was a member of the Kerry Panel. Score Kerry 1-12 Kildare 1-14.

UNDER-16: The Ballyheigue U-16 hurlers were defeated by Crotta in the Co.
Championship Final at Abbeydorney on Sunday evening. Crotta played with
the aid of the breeze in the first half and led by a point at the break.
Half-time score Ballyheigue 0-5 and Crotta 0-6. The Ballyheigue scorers in
the opening half were: Nathan Guerin 0-3, Conor O’Sullivan 0-1 and Graham
Slattery 0-1. Crotta started the second in determined mood and they added
3-6 to their half-time tally, where Ballyheigue could only add two points
to their half-time score. The Crotta team had a very good second half and
were deserved Co. Champions. Final score Ballyheigue 0-7 and Crotta 3-12.

Goggin, Thomas Gaynor, Rory Duggan, Jimmy O’Halloran, Ciaran Casey, Ricky
Hussey, Nathan Guerin 0-5, Conor O’Sullivan 0-1, Daniel O’Loughlin, David
O’Mahony, Graham Slattery 0-1, Luke McCrohan, Aidan Reidy, Brian Styles,
Seami Ó Fuaráin, Collin Walsh. This Ballyheigue team had a good year having
already won the Co. League Division 1 title and will be determined to add
the North Kerry Championship Trophy later on this year.

KERRY U-21: The Kerry Under-21 hurlers had a great victory over Donegal in
the All Ireland ’B’ Championship Q-Final at Dr Hide Park on Saturday last.
Full time score Kerry 0-25 and Donegal 1-9. Kerry will play Meath next
Saturday in the semi-final.
