Spin South West’s SANDSTORM is back!

SPIN South West’s SANDSTORM is back to Ballyheigue Beach, County Kerry and set to test your limits even further on Saturday 22nd July.
SANDSTORM is a 5k endurance race that will challenge you both physically and mentally with a course consisting of multiple obstacles and challenges along the beach at Ballyheigue. The dreaded 10 foot wall is back, as well as the net crawl, the tyre mound and many more gruelling obstacles to test your nerve.
Spaces are limited for this unique event so sign up now to guarantee your place. Registration costs €20.

Sandstorm came to Ballyheigue on August 29th 2015.

It was a fantastic event with over a thousand people registering to take part. The weather cleared up just in time to make it a very enjoyable run and there was great entertainment and food in the pubs afterwards. We hope that everyone who was visiting Ballyheigue for the first time will be back again.

This 5km Obstacle Course and adventure race promises to be one of the events of the year in Ballyheigue.

Sandstorm is organised by Spin South West and will take place on Ballyheigue Beach.

Regsitration will take place in Ballyheigue Community Centre on Friday Evening form 7:30 – 9pm and on Saturday Morning from 9:30 am. You must regsiter to get your race number, timing chip and headband.
A Limited number of places will be available on the day but to ensure your place we recommend registering online.

Places are limited so to avoid disappointment be sure to Register Now.

Starting at 12 Noon at the Lifeguards Hut on Ballyheigue Beach the 5 km Course will make its way back towards the Black Rock before turning and coming back to finish by the steps on the beach.

There are some great obstacles along the way to challenge you and your friends to what is sure to be an exhilarating race along the beach. Obstacles include from net crawls and tyre runs to tubes and A frames not to mention the 8ft wall. The sand on the beach is firm underfoot which should help. A quick dip in the beautiful Atlantic ocean is the perfect way to cool off after the race.

The local pubs will be putting on B-BQ-s and live music after the race so be sure to move around and see whats on.

Race Information for Saturday Aug 29th is below.

Registration and collection of race numbers will take place on the evening before and morning of the event from Ballyheigue Community Centre. Opening hours will be confirmed closer to the date. Please report to the registration area with just your full name. We require full names of each registrant in order to assign race numbers individually. Stewards and signage will be present to direct you. Upon presenting yourself you will be provided your race pack which includes your race number and timing chip, safety pins are also attached. Race numbers will need to be worn towards the front. You will also be given your official Race headband which we urge everyone to wear. Storage space is extremely limited so please leave your valuables at home/in your car.

Times & Location

The event takes place on Ballyheigue beach at 12 noon sharp on Saturday 29th August. The event starts at the Lifeguard hut adjacent to the carpark. The course is set to begin at this point, continuing along the water towards the Black Rock for 2.5km and returning to the start area The entire 5K option will be run on sand.


There is parking available in the beach car park and the car park by the castle gates as well as in the community centre car park.

There will be a Garda on duty directing parking along with stewards. Please pay attention to their instructions. Parking is limited so those participating in teams are urged to carpool. There is no
parking permitted on the beach. Please take caution with parking and out of respect for our host town, avoid parking on the main street or obstructing local businesses or residents.

Water/First Aid

Water will be supplied along the route and at the end of the race.

There will be a fully qualified First Aid team and ambulance on site in the unlikely event of any injuries

Please deposit your timing chips at end of the race in the bins provided. Race Times will be

PLEASE NOTE: If you cross the start line before the race begins your chip is activated so if you want to walk the course please do so BEFORE collecting your race pack.

Each participant will receive a unique, bespoke hand carved medal, courtesy of Monson Irish Jewellery upon completion of the course. There are also trophies for First, Second and Third places in both Mens and Womens category, also kindly donated by our local supplier. Overall Winners of each category will also receive a cash prize of €200 each.

Race Etiquette

The race will start in waves. Elite and more experienced runners are urged to move to the front to ensure an efficient race start. Walkers and joggers should keep to the later waves. Please avoid pushing through any of the obstacles to avoid any incidents. Our stewards will direst people through as quickly and efficiently as possible to ensure everyone’s safety. Please listen to instructions and HELP each other out. This is a fun race and group participation is encouraged. If you are having difficulty you can bypass the obstacle and move on.
